Everyone knows that in the last 3 years the crime has gone up substantially throughout the U.S, especially in California. In this blog post i will put my almost 20 years of locksmithing and security knowledge to help you protect your home and valuables as best as possible. To secure your home while on vacation, here are some tips you can follow:
1. Install High Security Locks:
The common thieves will always look for easy access points, so if you have a high security lock and your neighbor has standard locks, they will choose the easier locks to pick.
2. Inform a Neighbor You Trust:
One trick that thieves do nowadays is drive through neighborhoods daily and if they see a box is left on for longer than a day, they know that most likely no one is vacant. Inform a trusted neighbor or friend about your vacation plans. They can keep an eye on your property and pick up any mail or packages left at your door.
3. Use Timers for Lights:
Thieves will also check lighting and garage light, so set timers for your lights to turn on and off at different times to give the impression that someone is home.
4. Secure Doors and Windows:
Double-check that all doors and windows are locked securely before you leave. Consider installing deadbolts and security bars if needed.
5. Don't Advertise Your Absence:
Avoid posting about your vacation on social media before or during your trip. This can alert potential burglars that your home is empty.
7. Trim Overgrown Bushes:
Trim any overgrown bushes or trees around your property that could provide cover for burglars.
8. Consider a House Sitter:
If possible, hire a house sitter to stay at your home while you are away. This can deter burglars and ensure your property is actively monitored.
9. Cameras: By installing high quality cameras you can know when someone approaches your home, or even enters your home. Make sure all dead zones are covered, especially side to garage entrance and backyard.
By following these tips, you can help secure your home and have peace of mind while you are on vacation.
